“Wrap it in Rhythm” Teacher Workshop
Enhancing Language Arts and Fluency with Drumming and Percussion
In this music workshop teachers will learn strategies that use rhythm and percussion to enhance reading fluency and build literacy.
Beverly will guide teachers in playing drums and percussion to create a multi-layered rhythm ensemble that can engage hard-to-reach learners while exploring diversity and building character. Teachers will learn essential music skills and how to make drums and percussion from recycled material.
Using text from proverbs, historical speeches and content from other curriculum, teachers will explore the use of rhythm, repetition, accent, inflection and intonation in verbal communication. The natural rhythms and accents of spoken language will be used as a foundation to create small-group, meaningful, rhythmic compositions.
Teachers will know how to compose simple rhythms from the natural inflection of speech. They will be able to guide students in new ways to listen for accent, pauses, changes of pitch and cadence in oral and written language.
